A layer two shaped entirely around swapping
Unichain is a DeFi first rollup built by the team behind the best known onchain exchange, optimized for trading and liquidity rather than for general purpose applications. If your product touches swaps, it deserves a look.

What Unichain is actually for.
Unichain is an Ethereum layer two built with the OP Stack by the team behind Uniswap, and its purpose is narrower than most rollups will admit to. It is built for DeFi: faster block production so quotes go stale less often, block building designed to reduce the value extracted from ordinary traders, and a roadmap oriented around cross chain liquidity rather than around hosting every category of application. It is standard EVM underneath, so deploying is routine, but the optimization targets are trading problems.
In practice the chain hosts exchange activity and the things that surround it: liquidity provision, routing, lending against liquidity positions, aggregation, and the tooling professional liquidity providers use. The presence of a dominant exchange protocol at the center pulls liquidity in and gives new applications something to build against on day one. It also means the chain's fortunes are tied to that protocol's fortunes, which is a genuine strategic consideration for a founder rather than a footnote in a technical comparison.
The audience is DeFi native and unusually sophisticated about execution. These are people who understand price impact, fee tiers and hook design, and who evaluate a venue on whether it fills better. Consumer culture is minimal. Compared with rollups chasing wide adoption through consumer applications, Unichain has made a deliberate decision to be excellent for one category rather than adequate for all of them. Founders should read that as a filter on who should build here, not as a phase it will grow out of.
What the UNI token actually does.
The mechanics matter to you because the network token is the thing your own token competes with for the same attention and the same balance sheet.
Not a chain gas token
Transactions on Unichain are paid in ETH, as on other Ethereum rollups. UNI is the governance token of the Uniswap protocol, and conflating the two is a common and avoidable error in project documentation.
Protocol governance
UNI holders govern the Uniswap protocol, including decisions about fee mechanisms, deployments and treasury use. That governance carries influence over an exchange whose behavior matters a great deal on this chain.
Staking mechanisms
Governance has pursued mechanisms through which holders can stake in support of the network and share in value generated there, so the relationship is economic as well as nominal. Check current governance for specifics.
Broader than one chain
The token predates the chain and governs a protocol deployed across many networks, so its drivers extend well beyond this rollup. Describe that relationship carefully in your own materials.
UNI has a fixed initial supply distributed through an early community airdrop and allocations to team, investors and advisors, all long past their original vesting period, with a perpetual low rate of new issuance built into the original design. A governance treasury holds a substantial share and is directed by holder vote. The token has historically been a governance instrument rather than a claim on revenue, and proposals to change that have been among the most debated in the protocol's history, partly for regulatory reasons.
For a founder, the important thing is that the chain's headline token is not one you compete with in the usual way. There is no fresh network token being emitted to attract users, so incentive campaigns here look different: liquidity mining from your own budget, integration with the dominant exchange, and distribution through DeFi channels rather than through an airdrop race. That is harder for a cold start and better for anyone with a product real traders want, because the users present came for execution rather than for a points table.
Who you are actually launching to.
The single most useful question about any chain, and the one most founders answer last.
Liquidity providers
From individuals running concentrated positions to professional desks, all judging a venue on fees earned against impermanent loss and on how quickly they can rebalance.
DeFi power users
Traders and yield strategists who route across venues, care about execution quality, and will read your fee structure before they read your announcement.
Protocol integrators
Teams building routers, vaults, hooks and structured products that plug into existing exchange liquidity rather than trying to bootstrap pools of their own.
Good fit for
What to watch
- Consumer projects have almost no natural audience here. A game, a mint or a social product ships into a room where nearly everyone came to trade, and no campaign budget fixes that mismatch.
- The chain is closely tied to one protocol's success and governance. That is an advantage for liquidity and a concentration risk for strategy, and it is worth stating plainly in your own planning.
- Competing on execution against incumbents is brutal. If your differentiation is a slightly better swap interface, sophisticated users will test it against what they already use and go back within a day.
Launching on Unichain with Orca Web3.
The deliverables are the same everywhere. What changes per chain is everything about how they are made.
Positioning for an execution literate room
We build messaging that survives contact with people who will measure your claims. That usually means specific, testable statements about what your product does better rather than adjectives about speed.
Trading and liquidity interface design
We design the surfaces where money moves: routing displays, position management, fee and risk disclosure. These are precision interfaces and they carry most of the trust burden for a new venue.
Naming without collision
In an environment crowded with similar sounding DeFi projects and one dominant protocol nearby, we do naming and identity work that keeps you distinct and avoids implying an affiliation you do not have.
Token launch on Unichain
Positioning, identity, litepaper, tokenomics design, launch site and TGE campaign.
RWA issuance
Institutional grade brand and disclosure aware communications for tokenized assets.
dApp front end
Wallet flows, chain switching and transaction states built for this network's tooling.

Is Unichain a good home for a non DeFi product?
Rarely. The chain is engineered and populated for trading, and the community, integrations and attention all point that way. You can deploy anything an EVM chain supports, but a consumer application will find the ambient audience uninterested and the surrounding tooling built for somebody else's problem. If you have a strategic reason, such as an existing partnership or a DeFi component inside your product, it can make sense as one deployment among several. As a sole home for a consumer app, it is the wrong choice.
How should we talk about UNI in our materials?
Carefully and accurately. UNI is the governance token of the Uniswap protocol, not a gas token you pay fees in, and not a token you should imply your project has any special relationship with. Gas on the chain is paid in ETH. If your product interacts with the exchange protocol or with staking mechanisms governed by holders, describe the specific interaction and link to the governance source. Vague association is both a credibility risk and, in some framings, a legal one, so keep your language literal.
Do the chain's trading optimizations actually help our users?
For some products, materially. Faster block production narrows the window in which a quote goes stale, and block building designed to limit value extraction reduces one category of loss for ordinary traders. Whether your users feel it depends on what you are building. A swap front end or a strategy that rebalances often will benefit. An application that writes to the chain occasionally will not notice. Test with real order flow before you put a performance claim in your marketing, because this audience will check it.
What does Orca provide for a Unichain launch?
Brand and naming, narrative and litepaper, launch site, and front end design for trading, liquidity or vault interfaces, plus campaign and community work aimed at DeFi channels rather than at general crypto media. We do not deploy or audit contracts, provide liquidity, or advise on token classification. On this chain the deciding factor is usually interface quality and the precision of your claims, since the audience arrives already able to evaluate both.
Chains a project weighing Unichain usually looks at too.
